Hello Space Cadets,

Wow. Looking back at September it’s been a very busy month. Here we go!

New Boss Fight

Created a new boss fight with the goal of it being a way to test the player’s usage of the shield/reflection mechanic.

The mechanic is first tested on some simple puzzles and simple enemies that can only be destroyed by reflected projectiles.

Design

First I started with some rough sketches for the look of the boss.

FemaleWokelConcept

A first concept for the Queen Wokel

The creatures on this planet are known as Wokels. They are not a very big threat and act as basic mobs to blast at the start of the game.

Wokels may look cute, but they bite!

Although the Queen is far more ferocious and doesn’t take kindly to your interrupting her daytime soaps.

A second concept for the Queen Wokel

So i started roughing out the battle. The tricky thing is trying to find a correct balance of difficulty. Since it’s an early boss I don’t really want the player to get their arses handed to them. This fight is more about teaching the player.

The code actually broke here with hilarious results, just a constant unending barrage of projectiles and rocks falling from the ceiling. 🙂

Animation

Once I was happy with the design and the actual battle it was time to pretty things up. Suffice to say making these animations were a lot of fun to make.

The Result

Below is a GIF from the resulting battle. There have been some changes made since this, for example removing some of the decors in the foreground to make things less cluttered. Also the boulders have been changed to something else. (It’s a surprise!)

She kind of freaks me out

That’s All for Now

Thanks for checking out the devlog. Looking forward to seeing you next month!

ciao for now!
