New GFX Card, OpenGL 3.0 vs. DX10 etc.

OK, just to make this clear;

OpenGL3.0 will is (for all intents and purposes) OpenGL2.x but with a new API to program it. Basically, OpenGL3.0 = DX9 level hardware and below (for some features). This would be anything GF7 and back from NV and X1K and back for AMD/ATI.

The Mt. Evans update will add features to OpenGL3.x which will give access to D3D10 level features. These features will ONLY work on D3D10 hardware, so G80 and R600 hardware and onwards.

Pretty much; my point was mostly that, aside from bug fixes and maybe a few up and coming driver releases I'd consider most OGL2.x series drivers "done", as there is no point in pushing resources into it when the new API should be easier and cheaper to support.

Of course, as you say, if someone starts using D3D10 features via the EXT and GL2.1 you can expect them to be implimented; more likely however the Mt. Evans release will offically bring those to GL.
